1992-W proof $50 Gold Eagle

In 1992, which was the seventh year in which American Gold Eagle coins were minted, spot gold prices were down for the year and averaged a little below $345. This resulted in a buying opportunity for buyers of the bullion coins, which pushed mintage’s up for the year for those coins. Meanwhile, demand for the higher-priced, but scarcer proof coins was down in 1992. All four denominations or sizes of the proof coins saw their sales and thus their final mintages decline for the year. The $50, one-ounce coin came in with a final mintage of 44,826 coins.

The proof coins continued in 1992 to be sold directly by the U.S. Mint to collectors at a premium over their gold content. The coins were sold both individually and in four-coin proof sets. The $50 coin continued to be struck at the West Point Mint, while the fractional coins were produced at the Philadelphia Mint.
